PURPOSE:
Explore the influence of management factors (variety, plant density, crop history and nitrogen supply) on yield and grain quality in an attempt to increase the profitability of wheat growing in Central West NSW.
BACKGROUND:
Where growers in Central West (CW) NSW have sought to maximise wheat yield (against the water limited potential) they have often encountered problems with high screenings. Screenings cause a downgrade in grain quality, limiting marketing options and more often than not the value of the grain. While growers in CW NSW are very fortunate to have Manildra Milling as significant buyer of high screenings wheat, the profitability of wheat is limited by the increasing occurrence of high screenings.
While it is expected that there is a complex interaction of environmental and management factors that influence grain quality, this trial has sought to focus on the key management variables that can be manipulated by grain growers
